Renee Maxey, my preceptor, showed me a level of excellence in patient care that was well above her job description. I am blessed to watch such an Extraordinary Nurse provide patient care at such a high level with all of her patients. In one particular case, Renee advocated for a patient and his loved one during an end-of-life event. The patient was set to transition to comfort care the next day. However, he showed signs of decline. His loved one had actually had an accident and was also a patient on a different floor. The plan was to allow the loved one to be present when the transition occurred. Renee called the provider to come assess the patient and asked for permission to get the patient’s loved one from the other unit. Unfortunately, this all occurred during shift change. Renee said she would stay and take responsibility for the other patient so that the loved one could be there in such an emotional moment. Renee took care of both patients that evening and made sure they had their sacred moment. Renee did more than just her job that day; she gave her patients their final moments to say goodbye. Renee deserves to be honored for her dedication to people. She has truly set an incredible example of how to be a nurse.
