My husband was fortunate to have Heather as his nurse for five consecutive nights. He was admitted for a bowel blockage and required an emergency laparotomy, during which he coded and became extremely ill. The surgeons were unable to complete his surgery because he was unstable. On Friday, he was taken back to surgery to finish the bowel procedure, and that night we were grateful to have Heather assigned to care for him. She assessed him from head to toe and explained everything to us in great detail. She was very reassuring and comforting, not only to her patient but also to me, his wife. She answered our questions without hesitation in a way that we both could understand, explaining the purpose of the medication. She never hesitated to contact the MD if a medication didn’t seem effective. She was incredibly attentive. My husband had a couple of nights where he felt uncomfortable with his trach, hot, and just plain fed up and impatient. She had a way of speaking with him that calmed him down, reassuring him that what he was experiencing was part of the healing process. She reached out to the RT department to troubleshoot the trach and vent to ensure he was more comfortable. She also provided great comfort to both him and me. This young lady knows her stuff and certainly knows how to communicate with her patients and their families. She took the time to ensure not only that her patient had exactly what he needed but also that I had what I needed as well. The love she showed us is unlike anything we have encountered during the numerous hospitalizations he has had over the last three years. She made us feel like we were her only patient and family. If we could, we would adopt her! This young lady is heaven-sent. We thank God that she came into our lives. We will never forget this angel on earth. We truly love Heather, and she will always be in our hearts and minds.
