I am nominating Marilia Silvestre for the DAISY Award. Marilia is a leader among her peers, an innovator when it comes to solving complex problems, and a strong advocate who fights for her patients' well-being. She is not afraid to take on big challenges and never shies away from a difficult patient assignment. Marilia has been part of our unit since December 2021. In those three years, she has proven herself adept at taking care of the sickest patients. More than that, many of the staff, both young and old, have looked to her for guidance or advice when situations arise. Time and again, Marilia has demonstrated competence and compassion for her patients and fellow co-workers that make her a natural leader in CVICU. Marilia has also earned the respect and admiration of the CVICU leadership and surgeons. She is always willing to pitch in and help; she has stepped up multiple times to switch to night shifts to help cover staff shortages. She is put in charge on her weekends because she has earned the respect of the staff and has proven herself able to handle what can sometimes be a very acute and dynamic unit. JSUMC has been looking to expand its shock program, meaning that CVICU will begin seeing more Impellas, ECMOs, and LVADs. Marilia has used her innovative creativity to come up with solutions to improve the education of our staff. In an effort to enhance training on these devices, Marilia put together a reference book for all the staff to utilize. This is particularly helpful for our night staff, as many of them are new, both to the unit and to the devices we use. Our shock program has been a success, in part because of the contributions made to the program by nurses like Marilia. I am very proud of Marilia and all her accomplishments. Her quiet nature and pleasant demeanor instill confidence in the unit when she is there. I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses than Marilia Silvestre.
