The patient and her little sister were overwhelmed physically and mentally, yet LaShandra showed such compassion, offering not just physical help but also emotional reassurance during a very difficult time.
I would like to nominate LaShandra Sanders for the exceptional and compassionate care she continuously provides to all of her patients. One specific example I can remember is when LaShandra was helping in the DOSC Post-Op unit one afternoon and overheard a patient (whom she had earlier prepared for surgery) in the process of being discharged after having had a port-a-cath placed for chemotherapy and other cancer treatment. The patient lived out of town, so the Cancer Center had previously made a reservation for the patient to stay overnight at the hotel adjacent to the hospital. However, check-in time for the hotel was hours away, yet the patient was being discharged.

The patient had traveled into town to the hospital with her teenage sister, who had a very large amount of their personal belongings in tow. When LaShandra learned that the hotel check-in time was hours away, she called the hotel herself to see if she could get the patient checked in earlier so that she and her sister wouldn't be left to wait with all their belongings in the hotel lobby. After several unsuccessful attempts to get hotel staff on the phone, LaShandra walked to the hotel and personally spoke with the hotel's front desk staff to see if she could get the patient checked in ASAP. Once hotel staff confirmed that a room was available and ready for the patient, LaShandra then escorted the patient, along with her teenage sister and all of their belongings, to the hotel in order to ensure a seamless and hassle-free check-in process.

If that was not enough, Lashandra then also escorted the patient and her sister to their hotel room, helped them to get all their belongings inside safely, and ensured that they were safe and all their needs were met before leaving them. The patient and her little sister were overwhelmed physically and mentally, yet LaShandra showed such compassion, offering not just physical help but also emotional reassurance during a very difficult time. This act of compassion by LaShandra helped to ensure that this patient and her little sister were not left in limbo after having had anesthesia and while dealing with the physical and emotional toll of cancer treatment. This is just one example of how LaShandra embodies the true essence of nursing. I would love for her to be recognized for the profound difference that she makes in the lives of her patients day in and day out!
