Natalie also gave the patient her personal cell phone number in case she had any questions or needed to talk with her over the weekend.
Natalie Strom has been with our department for several years and has consistently demonstrated herself to be a highly skilled nurse. She possesses excellent critical thinking skills and is a respected nurse in our department. Her talents extend far beyond being an exceptional nurse. We had an outpatient left heart cath. During the patient’s recovery, the patient became nauseous and vomited several times. Later, the patient became slightly hypotensive and was not feeling very well. Natalie did not take the patient’s symptoms lightly and, of course, stayed on top of things, communicating her concerns to the doctor and treating the patient as ordered.

The patient began to feel better later in the day, and her vitals returned to normal by the time she was ready to be discharged home. Natalie remained deeply concerned about the patient. She was concerned that the patient lived alone – even though she had family living next door. She encouraged the patient’s family to stay with her overnight, and indeed, the family did stay with the patient. Natalie also gave the patient her personal cell phone number in case she had any questions or needed to talk with her over the weekend. The patient did call the nurse the next morning, not feeling well. The patient told the nurse she had body aches and was running a fever of 101. The nurse encouraged the patient to go to the nearest ER and be evaluated. She also told the patient to call her back and let her know how she was feeling. The patient called her back later that day and told her they diagnosed her with a UTI.

During my callbacks today, I called the patient, and she had been admitted to the hospital in Jeff Davis with polynephritis. She had to go back to the hospital yesterday because her temp was 102, and she still was not feeling well. She was so appreciative of her care and mentioned Natalie saying, “She took such great care of me on Friday. And went above and beyond for me. She really showed me how much she cared for me.”

Natalie's compassion for this patient truly exemplified “Care Like Family.” She is someone that everyone in our department looks up to and is highly valued by her colleagues. I'm thrilled to have her on our team!
