While visiting his wife of 37 years, a visitor experienced sudden and worsening chest pain. The bedside team recognized the medical emergency and activated a rapid response. On the way to the ED, the man experienced cardiac arrest. Lowering him to the floor in the elevator lobby, a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, techs, transporters, pharmacists, managers, respiratory therapists, nurse helpers, security, doctors, and mid-levels set to work to perform advanced cardiac life support. The scene was unexpected and even jarring, but the teamwork and efforts made by the responders were professional and well-organized. The patient's wife was kept updated on the situation and supported. Miraculously, the team was able to return the patient’s pulse and transported him to the emergency department. His wife was brought to the ED and allowed to see him before he was flown to SJH. The team was compassionate and kind as they explained what had happened and what she could expect next. We received updates from the St. Joe’s cath lab team that they were able to successfully stent a LAD occlusion. Over the next week, his balloon pump was removed, he was extubated, and he left the hospital neurologically intact. His daughter posted praises on Facebook about the care both her mother and father received that day.
