As he listened, Chelle told his grandmother, “This flower is from your grandson. He loves you so much!” This tender act from Chelle brought a lot of comfort to this autistic boy.
Chelle made a big difference by bringing comfort and closure to an autistic boy whose grandmother had died. His parents were unsure how he would respond to her death, particularly because it was unexpected for him. When he arrived at the Shenandoah House with his parents, he paced the hallways for a while before he was able to go to his grandmother’s room. He did not want to go into the room, but instead stayed on the outside of the curtain while he told her grandmother a few things he wanted her to know. He was crying and distraught. Chelle then suggested that he give his grandmother a flower that could go with her from a beautiful bouquet that had been in her room. His eyes lit up, and he immediately wanted to do that. He quickly chose the flower from the bouquet he wanted to give her and clutched it tightly against him. Chelle walked with him back to his grandmother’s room. He did not go into the room but stood outside the curtain while Chelle took the flower into the room and laid it on his grandmother’s chest. As he listened, Chelle told his grandmother, “This flower is from your grandson. He loves you so much!” This tender act from Chelle brought a lot of comfort to this autistic boy. I would love for Chelle to receive the DAISY Award!
