I asked the security guard in the waiting room if the cab had arrived and he stated no, but one of the day shift nurses had taken them home.
We had an infant come into the ED, was evaluated and determined safe for discharge; however, his mother was unable to find a ride home and asked if we could reach out for a Medicare ride home for them both. Obviously, we contacted the appropriate company and were advised it may take up to 3 hours for one to become available. I informed the infant's mother and she stated that was expected and asked if she could sit in the waiting room during that time, to which we told her that was fine.
Later, hours later, while discharging another patient, I found the mother and infant still in the waiting room. I was surprised, asked her if she needed anything, to which she asked for a diaper and a bottle. These items were provided, and I advised I would contact the company again to ask for an update. I delegated the task to the secretary and was informed that the company had contacted Uber and had not heard back from Uber. The secretary advised the company that we didn’t have Uber services in our area. The company stated they would have to discontinue the current search and put the request in another way, but it would be up to another 3-hour waiting period. The secretary advised the company to proceed with the request. Some time passed when our shift ended at 7 PM and after giving report, I went to check on the mother and baby only to find that they were no longer in the waiting room. I asked the security guard in the waiting room if the cab had arrived and he stated no, but one of the day shift nurses had taken them home. I went to the charge nurse to ask who had taken them and no one knew. I could not find Chantel to let her know what was going on, so I sent her a text to ask her if she had taken them home, and she stated yes, it was her. My heart could not have been prouder to call her my preceptor.
