I had an extensive outpatient lactation consult with Michelle in which she answered all my questions, gave me confidence and gave me supplies to help us as I wasn’t prepared to start pumping so soon.
After being induced and delivering our daughter, I had emergency surgery due to delivery complications. As a result, I had blood loss, resulting in my Hgb dropping to 6.8 and needing blood. Additionally, our baby girl needed to be supplemented with formula while I was in surgery. These factors complicated how we anticipated breastfeeding to go.

Michelle was amazing in this process. She provided reassurance and explained that for my situation, my milk supply would likely be delayed and come in later due to my body’s extra recovery needs. Michelle helped give insight into the realities of breastfeeding and the importance of doing what works for us and, most importantly, keeping our baby fed. This was refreshing after listening to all of the do’s and don’ts of breastfeeding in a perfect world that I was taught in the breastfeeding classes I took prenatally.

After meeting Michelle on Friday, the day after delivery, we were lucky enough to have her as our nurse on Saturday before discharging. We enjoyed having her as our nurse and appreciated the extra breastfeeding education provided.

Following discharge, I was seen in the OB ED for a pre-eclampsia workup due to high BP and headaches. After this, I was seen in the ED after developing Bell’s Palsy. The ED visits impacted breastfeeding once again, leading to a need to pump and clogged ducts as my supply came in, and I am now an overproducer. This came as a surprise after supplementing with formula at home because I wasn’t producing enough before.

I had an extensive outpatient lactation consult with Michelle in which she answered all my questions, gave me confidence and gave me supplies to help us as I wasn’t prepared to start pumping so soon. She also called the following week to check in on how things were going and make more helpful suggestions. She greatly helped me through my lactation struggles and I am grateful for her help, kindness, generosity, and support.
