Marissa possesses the perfect balance of humor, professionalism, and empathy in her approach to nursing.
Marissa was the nurse on shift during the onset of my wife’s labor. As soon as the contractions became persistent and significant, Marissa responded swiftly. She maintained an open line of communication with my wife and me on next steps. She quickly procured the anesthesiologist on shift to administer an epidural. Shortly after the epidural, my wife’s blood pressure plummeted, and in conjunction with the anesthesiologist and other nurses as support, the situation was quickly remedied. All of the extra nurses quickly exited the room, while all remaining calm and empathetic during a time that was very chaotic for my wife and me. After 2 1/2 hours of active labor and pushing, Marissa continued to support my wife’s goal of having a natural birth. Everything from alternating positions to being her biggest cheerleader in that moment. Then, the moment where her expertise came into play, and she called in the attending resident to assess the progress of labor.

For the last hour of active labor, the baby had not moved, despite my wife giving everything she had. At this point, preparations for the C-section were underway. Major kudos to all of the doctors, nurses, and other supporting staff for ensuring my wife and daughter made it through the C-section safely. What we admire most about Marissa is her selflessness, a quality all nurses should possess to ensure a positive patient experience. She divulged that she just came back to work from time off spent with her four-month-old daughter. Moments like this, where nurses’ personal and equally important priorities come second to those of their patients, should be acknowledged and praised. Marissa possesses the perfect balance of humor, professionalism, and empathy in her approach to nursing. All qualities that made our birthing experience memorable in a positive way, despite the obscure circumstances. On behalf of my wife and me, please extend the warmest, heartfelt thank you to Marissa and all of the other staff. I hope you never lose your passion for nursing. The world needs more nurses like you. Thank you, Marissa!
