Ashley Smith was selected as the 2025 individual recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Safety in collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Ashley Smith exemplifies the highest standards of nursing excellence and innovation. She collaborated with the Sepsis Coordinator and EPIC analysts to identify and resolve system design flaws in the Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units, improving early detection of sepsis and saving lives. In another example of her foresight, Ashley identified a gap in the ordering process for QuantiFERON TB Gold Plus and AFB Culture tests, which failed to prompt providers to initiate Airborne Precautions for TB rule-out patients. Her collaboration with IT teams led to an update in EPIC that ensured this vital safety step was never overlooked.
Ashley’s leadership also addressed patient monitoring systems gaps. Noticing that chair alarms were not visible on Status Boards, she collaborated with Clinical Informatics to integrate chair alarms into the boards. Ashley has identified 61 great catches and earned six prestigious Great Catch Awards for her groundbreaking work on enterprise-level patient safety initiatives.
