Rebecca Schubert was my nurse during the majority of my labor and delivery. She was very informative and supportive from start to end. She respected my wishes but adapted to my changing wishes as labor became much more intolerable than I imagined. After 20 hours of insufferable pain with no let up from the IV pain meds, I decided to ask for an epidural. Right before I got it, I was four cm. Seconds later I was seven to eight cm. Rebecca made sure I got the epidural prioritized as she knew the pain would increase from there. What felt like moments after that, I was dilated to eight cm and the doctor felt a cord prolapse. Rebecca took her place and rode the bed with me to the OR holding her hand between the umbilical cord and my baby’s head. She helped me stay calm on the quick ride to the OR, even though this was a very extreme and scary emergency. The urgency, care, and ability to keep me calm in the five minutes between discovering the cord prolapse and pulling my baby out of me via emergency c-section is something I do not have words for. This team saved my baby’s life. As someone who has never had surgery of any kind and being a first-time mom, this was an extremely traumatic situation for me. I can’t thank Rebecca and the entire L&D team for keeping my baby and me safe and healthy. After only four and a half hours in the NICU, my baby girl is healthy and happy. Thank you.
