She then talked calmly and friendly with both my children. It was amazing how quickly she gained their trust and then told them that she herself was going to take care of the vaccines and finger stick after the doctor came in to complete the well visit.
Jill’s compassion and kindness changed everything for my family at our last visit to Riley Pediatrics. It was a dreaded day for my 11 year old and 9 year old. Ever since the COVID pandemic, both kids have been incredibly fearful of vaccines and it was time again to have shots. Starting with a well visit for my youngest, it began with an attempted finger stick to test cholesterol. Our nurse, Jill, recognized immediately that there was some intense fear. Instead of forcing the test, Jill changed course and in a calm demeanor, asked well-visit questions instead. She then talked calmly and friendly with both my children. It was amazing how quickly she gained their trust and then told them that she herself was going to take care of the vaccines and finger stick after the doctor came in to complete the well visit. When Jill came back, she brought buzzy and shot blockers to make things more comfortable. Between my two kids, there was a finger stick to be completed and six vaccines. There was still a high level of fear in the room, but thanks to the previous calmness and kindness from Jill, our 9-year-old was able to unclench her fist and complete the finger stick. The next obstacle of vaccines also required incredible compassion and flexibility on Jill's part. It took some coaxing to get my kid’s sweatshirt off, and then Jill was willing to readjust so my kid could sit on my lap instead of the table. The compassion and kindness continued with my other kid when it was her turn. Jill did such a great job that my 11-year-old actually giggled after each vaccine. I was incredibly thankful and relieved. Jill stated it was her goal to help kids be less fearful of vaccines, and in my opinion, she definitely reached that goal during our visit. I believe in the importance of vaccines, and this one morning at the pediatric office with Jill changed their feelings towards shots. It helped them gain comfort in the process that I hope they will continue to carry with them through adulthood. Thank you again to Jill. You are extraordinary.
