P - Drake Davis has a passion for serving his patients, and no matter what is happening in his world, he is completely present when he walks into the patient's room. On one of the year's most beautiful days, an 89-year-old patient asked if she could take a trip outside to get some fresh air. Drake took it upon himself to take her outside, sat with her, and truly connected. There were decades between them, but from an outsider's perspective, you would have thought these were two friends sitting, laughing, and smiling over good conversation.
E - He shows empathy by putting himself in that person's world. He knew the patient could use fresh air to brighten her spirits. He listened to her needs, which were beyond pain meds or her surgical site. What she needed was sunlight and a friend to converse with.
T - Drake collaborates with his peers and colleagues on a daily basis. He never hesitates to jump in and lend a helping hand. He connected with his peers and worked with them to make this happen. He teamed up with another nurse to watch over his other patients on the unit so that he could be present with this patient outside.
A - It is truly admirable that he can connect and go above and beyond for his peers and patients and that he knows how to do this without being asked.
L - Drake truly loves taking care of patients and the nursing profession. He knows that nothing is perfect and wants to find ways to ensure that we advance the practice, but in the end, he loves his patients. Another team member who walked by during the interaction captured a photo of Drake sitting with the patient, and the photo shows Drake's genuine smile from ear to ear.
S - This was a selfless act. He may have needed to do other things, which meant he had to stay later to document that evening. However, what was important was that trip outside and spending time connecting and getting to know his patient beyond her diagnosis or hospital stay.
