She was very calm and clear spoken when discussing her patient with the code team and providers.
Clinical Skills:
We had a patient on the unit for whom Ashley Schlabach was the primary nurse. She was completing her assessment and med pass on this patient when they started to make an odd sound and were less responsive. She pushed her distress button and checked her patient’s pulse. Then, seeing on telemetry that they were going into ventricular tachycardia, she pulled the code alarm and again pulse checked. Initiating a code blue so quickly after her duress alarm sent her unit teammates to her side as we helped her get the backboard and pacer pads on her patient. She was the first to start compressions. She was very calm and clear spoken when discussing her patient with the code team and providers. We were able to get the patient back after one round of compressions with all the interventions in place and ready.
Compassionate Care:
We notified the husband and daughter of the patient that she had coded. On arrival to the unit, they were greeted and escorted to the room where Ashley was with her patient. Ashley helped set up the room so that the husband could sit and hold hands with his wife as we worked around the couple getting IV lines in, starting cardiac drips and acute bipap. Maintaining their bond while working with bulky equipment and lines, she explained what had occurred and what the next steps in her care would look like. Ashley delivered this information calmly and appropriately to the audience so they could understand and feel secure with the new care plan. She worked with respiratory therapy to adjust the bipap to get a comfortable fit and provide support for her patient as she recovered.
Exemplary Service:
While working to settle her postcode patient, she reached out to her teammates and delegated care of her other patients. Her teammates were willing to pitch in, absorb care, and work as a cohesive team to take care of all patients during a time of stress. Her willingness to help others if they needed assistance paid dividends, as her team could surround her with support in her time of need.
Continued Commitment:
Ashley has very strong critical thinking skills and is always willing to ask questions, gain new knowledge, and look up policies and protocols for our unit and hospital. As her charge nurse and a fellow bedside nurse, I am impressed with her depth of questions as a new grad and her commitment to find out the best practice for her patients.
