Although my interactions with Abbi were brief (only an afternoon and the following morning), she left an indelible impression on me. First, she was always cheerful and upbeat. She was completely professional in her behavior yet courteous enough to answer questions that I had. If another staff member needed help, Abbi always seemed to be available to help. If my wife called for help, Abbi was almost always right there to see to her needs. So far, this sounds as if she was simply doing her job, but her conduct contrasted with that of other staff members. They, too, were doing their jobs, but when Abbi was in the room and I was watching her, I sensed that her attitude was more than that. She worked as if she realized what she was doing was her calling, to meet the needs of this patient right now, not simply fulfilling job requirements. She was tending to a patient, and this patient had her total focus to see to her needs and to meet them to the best of her ability. I have rarely sensed such feeling watching a nurse. Abbi was truly a blessing to my wife and made her stay much better.
