Waiting for the impending death of a family member is never easy. I sat in the hospital as a family member as well as a healthcare worker. I understood the reality of the situation and that death was near, while the rest of my family still had hope for a full recovery. Having a nurse who would talk medically to me, speak reality to me, comfort me, comfort my family, and try and help them understand...that's what got me through the final day of my grandmother's life. The nurse was a jewel. Without any knowledge of my background, when I walked into the ICU for the first time, she explained every tube and why it was there, she introduced me to the ventilator and all the settings. She explained all the labs to me and reiterated what the doctor said. My grandmother took a quick decline, and the nurse came and found me. She sat with me in the waiting room and told me all the facts about where we could go from there. She asked what we wanted as a family. She came back and saw me before she left, which was actually an hour after her shift ended. She was my peace. She was the reason I could walk into ICU room 5 and find peace.
