Despite Anne’s emotional turmoil herself, she supported everyone in the department that night, the spouse and their friends, and all the staff in the department.
I would like to nominate Anne Givney, on behalf of the Nurse Management Team at Cavan Monaghan Hospital, as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award.

Anne’s clinical skills and capacity and especially her Compassion, Care and Commitment, exemplify the qualities of a nurse that our patients, their families and our staff recognise as an outstanding professional role model.

She meets all of the following criteria:

•    Demonstrates exceptional empathy and respect for the patient or family member, ensures the dignity of the person in their care
•    Attends to the needs of a patient or family member in a remarkable way, using evidence-based care
•    Demonstrates courage to do the right thing and a work ethic that demonstrates a tangible passion for patient care

ADON Anne Givney, presented to her night shift recently at 2000hrs as normal. However, this night was never going to be a normal night for her, as this night, was her last night, as ADON Night Service Manager for Cavan Monaghan Hospital, prior to her retirement, having given 36 years of loyal and committed service to Cavan Monaghan Hospital.

So Anne usually got the busy nights, and tonight was to be no different!

Just as handover was finished, and she was setting off to support the wards and the ED, a pre-alert came through to say that there was a trauma on the way in. So Anne being Anne, went straight for the ED resuscitation room, grabbing the gloves and apron en route and waiting for the patient to arrive.

The ambulance arrived, and the patient had sustained serious multiple injuries.

Anne remained in the ED from 2120 to 0230 assisting clinically as and when required, whilst also supporting the family and friends of the patient, in addition to supporting the ED nursing & NCHD staff, giving everybody her all, without a second thought

Unfortunately, this young patient passed away leaving a heartbroken spouse and young family behind. Despite Anne’s emotional turmoil herself, she supported everyone in the department that night, the spouse and their friends, and all the staff in the department.

A tough night, on a normal night, never mind being your final night, pre-retirement, but she held it together like the true professional I have known Anne to be, for the last 20 years, that we have worked together within the ADON team.

She has been such a positive role model and inspiration to all her colleagues in Cavan Monaghan Hospital over the last 36 years.  She built up such an amazing relationship with all staff, of all disciplines, that no matter what she asked of them, they all came with her. Anne always led by example and was so thoughtful in her approach to people, as she would often say, “you don’t know what’s going on in people’s lives outside of work, so be kind”.

What Anne didn’t know at the time of her coming to work that night was that there were so many staff in Cavan General Hospital who wanted to show their respect and appreciation to Anne for her leadership, kindness, Compassion, Care, and Commitment over the years, that a number of staff (over 20) had decided to come in at midnight and surprise her one last time, but this wasn’t to be, as there was no way Anne was going to leave her patient, the family and her colleagues at a time when they needed her the most.

Anne’s friends and colleagues who came in understood why Anne was unable to come down and respected her for it. They took a photo so she could always remember their presence on her last night.

So it was an emotional night from start to finish, yet she still remained professional and composed to the end of her shift, she completed all her duties and responsibilities with a heavy heart, and even managed a smile after handover, where a breakfast meet & greet was arranged, where so many staff, representing all disciplines popped in to wish her well in her retirement, thus demonstrating the huge respect and admiration that Cavan Monaghan Hospital had for Anne Givney as ADON Night Service Manager.
