The patient's best friend pulled Hannah aside, embraced her, and said, "Thank you for everything. Thank you for being there for her and her family - they needed you...I needed you."
Hannah is more than just an Extraordinary Nurse. She is an extraordinary woman. I have had the pleasure of working with Hannah on numerous occasions - unfortunately, given the team I work on, these experiences often result in the passing of a patient. I have watched Hannah provide the most compassionate, holistic, and whole-hearted care to each of her patients and their families. She goes above and beyond to make sure patients receive exemplary care while also providing support for their loved ones.
During my most recent experience with Hannah, she was involved in the care of a patient who was a DCD, hoping to donate to EOL. The family really struggled to come to terms with the idea of the patient dying. Several family members projected feelings of anger and fear toward Hannah, but Hannah remained a positive and therapeutic presence. She shared empathy and openness in allowing the family to express their emotion - while remaining professional, Hannah treated them as if they were her own family.
After the DCD trial, the patient's best friend pulled Hannah aside, embraced her, and said, "Thank you for everything. Thank you for being there for her and her family - they needed you...I needed you." This friend and Hannah shared tears and gratitude for one another. Hannah helped this family find peace in the passing of their loved one. Hannah is the epitome of excellent nursing. She is a friend, a caretaker, and a leader, but most importantly, she's human, and she remembers to treat patients and families as such. She creates a safe space to share emotions and provides support during times of grief. Hannah deserves this award for the amazing qualities she brings to this organization.
