Cory handled the case professionally with compassion and empathy. Cory's willingness to help my mom shined through and gave me a sense of ease.
My 83 y.o. mother was admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotic treatment for UTI. After a longer than anticipated length of stay, she was discharged finally on day 11. My mother is typically an alert, active, and strong woman. Needless to say, the UTI was a game-changer. The infection was a challenge to treat, and mom experienced altered mental status and severe weakness. Her weakness required her to need assistance with all ADLs. Not being able to independently ambulate made it physically and emotionally challenging. This would challenge any person's state of dignity.
I arrived from Florida on Day 8 of her hospital admission. I could see the physical and mental challenges my mom was facing. Her labs slowly began to improve with the IV antibiotic treatment. She had to do a bowel prep for a colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy starting in the afternoon on the day I arrived. I knew this was not going to be an easy task for all involved. Cory Schmidt was the nurse working with my mom on this day. She was amazing! Cory handled the case professionally with compassion and empathy. Cory's willingness to help my mom shined through and gave me a sense of ease. Cory was attentive even if the timing was inconvenient. She was reassuring and supportive of my mom. Knowing my mom had not been able to shower, Cory made sure mom was always clean and actually made accommodations for mom to "feel good" when discharged.
Clinically, Cory is spot on. Cory noticed the need to change the IV port and actually took the time to change it prior to sending mom down to endoscopy. She also communicated all procedures and treatments clearly to my mom. However, her true "talent" is being able to see beyond the clinical needs. Cory was mindful and treated my mom with respect, sensitivity, and compassion.
I have been in many hospital settings caring for family and strongly feel Cory Schmidt should be recognized with the DAISY Award. She has the innate ability to pick up on a patient's need, combined with strong clinical knowledge and a huge heart. She makes a difference for patients and the families of patients. Thank you, Cory!
