We had a scenario in Women and Infants where NICU was going to be up a nurse and planned to send to Birth Suites (BS) for support with impending deliveries at 2300.
It just so happens that at 2308, during prime report time, we had to call an alpha C section on twins after just having had a shoulder dystocia vaginal birth 25 minutes prior. The BS Charge called out the alpha, and Kate Patton from Family Care Suites (FCS) immediately called and asked how she could help.
NICU came for delivery and still sent Lindsey over to be an assist for the twins. Since the BS RN was off at 2300, FCS was able to support sending Haile down to take over on the vaginal birth despite not being cross-trained to our unit. All this despite FCS having a full assignment of their own!
I love it when someone is willing to think critically about the skill set they have and find a way to help instead of focusing on what training they don't have. The ‘can do’ attitude of both sister units was remarkable during that hour. The twins had appropriate recovery assessments thanks to Lindsey’s expertise with babies, which allowed the BS Team to focus on the mom and the stage 2 PPH. Haile even stated, “I got it don’t worry about it,” after the charge went to try and relieve her so she could get back to her FCS patients if she needed.
There was something to be said about the critical thinking and teamwork that took place during this one hour that exemplifies the teamwork we strive to have in Women & Infants.
