He knew how scared we were to see Mom in this incoherent state. He understood her condition and talked with me about a similar personal event in his own life - he GOT IT!!
My mother was unexpectedly taken by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital. She was very sick and, though she has Alzheimer's, couldn't even utter sounds to indicate how she was feeling. At the first introduction to my Mom, Russ was kind, compassionate, and very concerned about her well-being. Yes, as a nurse, you would safely assume ALL these attributes are present. But, sadly, it is not always so. Russ seemed exceptional. It was a very busy night in the ER, yet he would continually come in to check on Mom, my Dad, and me. He knew how scared we were to see Mom in this incoherent state. He understood her condition and talked with me about a similar personal event in his own life - he GOT IT!! After several hours of hydrating and testing, there was little left to do for her. It was just time and healing needed. However, she still seemed so out-of sorts. She was about to be released, and I brought up another concern I had and he immediately notified the Dr. on call, and another test was ordered. My Dad and I just felt grateful that Russ heard and responded to our concerns. He had such a calming, kind demeanor that it greatly changed the atmosphere of the situation. We think Russ exhibited ALL of the Key Values that the DAISY Award exemplifies, and made a meaningful difference in my Mother's care. My Dad and I would like to nominate Russ Shoen for this recognition and award. He certainly deserves it! If all hospitals had nurses (and care) like Russ, the world would be a better place. We offer our gratefulness and thanks to him.
