When we entered the emergency department with our disabled daughter, who is nonverbal, Brenda immediately started making connections with us so that she could better understand our daughter and her needs. She was so sweet and kind to our daughter and explained to us in detail what was happening and what the doctors and nurses were doing to help our daughter. She even educated us about why she was having such a high fever and why not to be scared about the situation. Even though she is mentally challenged, Brenda spoke directly to her and gave her words of comfort. Brenda let our daughter know what she was doing and, therefore, showed compassion, not treating her like she was incapable of reasoning. Having Brenda work with her and our family was like wrapping us up in a big, loving hug.
