When my grandson saw this, tears immediately filled his eyes. He was so thankful. I can tell he was genuinely grateful for this. With tears in his eyes, he got up to give Susie a hug, not once but twice. He was so appreciative of her and what she had done for him.
My grandson’s nurse, Susie, was nothing short of amazing. I was not there for the entirety of the visit in the emergency room, but my daughter was and she had nothing but great things to say about her. My daughter mentioned to me that Susie treated her and my grandson so kindly and with such compassion. My grandson, unfortunately, had to come in on a Saturday, and to him, it was the worst Saturday to be in the hospital because he was supposed to be going to his best friend’s Halloween party.
My daughter said that Susie came in and did the IV. She explained the procedure step-by-step to him to minimize the fear he had. While she was trying to find the vein she couldn’t really see one so she went to go grab a red light, when she came back she found my grandson crying and asked what was wrong. She asked if he was nervous about the IV and he proceeded to say no, my daughter ended up telling her that he was sad because he was missing his best friend‘s Halloween party. Susie proceeded to make conversation with him to minimize any fear and ask him what he was dressing up as for Halloween my grandson told her he was going to be Iron Man. Susie did a phenomenal job with the IV and got it on the first shot. A bit later, Susie came back with an Iron Man action figure with a trick-or-treat goodie bag she made him. There were all sorts of things for him to do in there, along with some pieces of candy that my daughter said were okay for my grandson to have. When my grandson saw this, tears immediately filled his eyes. He was so thankful. I can tell he was genuinely grateful for this. With tears in his eyes, he got up to give Susie a hug, not once but twice. He was so appreciative of her and what she had done for him. As they hugged I can see that she also needed this hug, tears filled her eyes as well.
I know the emergency room was busy because we noticed all the nurses running around, going from room to room. I took the time out of my day to write this for Susie because I know that even while she had other patients to attend to, she took the time out of her day to put the biggest smile on my grandson, and for that, I am thankful. Something so little put the biggest smile on my grandson, brought him to tears, and even made him say he was okay with missing the Halloween party.
My grandson got admitted, and because of Susie‘s actions he was not nervous at all about staying the night. He was actually very excited and was asking Susie and a child life specialist many questions about what he could expect when he went upstairs. A huge thank you again to Susie. Even though we don’t wish to come back to the hospital, I hope we bump into her again.
