She had nothing, her children had nothing, but what she did have was Abby.

I have had the honor and pleasure of working with Abby for just over a year. Over the course of the year, I have witnessed Abby go above and beyond for not only her patients but also other patients, including those not in the ICU. While I could provide story after story about why Abby earned this DAISY Award, I would like to share the most recent one with you.

Not too long ago, in the ICU, there was a young mom struggling with both alcohol and domestic violence. She was scared of losing her children. She had nowhere to go. Her phone was turned off by her abuser's family. She had nothing, her children had nothing, but what she did have was Abby. Abby was her nurse for one night, but that one night made a lasting impact.

Abby took the time to listen to the patient, talk with her, and hear her concerns. Abby was able to connect with the patient on a level beyond basic patient care. At the end of the shift, the patient felt she could leave her abuser and start a new life with her children.

After her 12-hour shift, Abby went to Walmart and bought school supplies, clothes, and toys for the patient's children. She also bought clothes for the patient and a "burner" phone so the patient could have access to the outside world. Abby did all of this quietly, without seeking recognition.

As nurses, we are called to show compassion. As nurses of Bon Secours St Francis, we are called to serve. Abby is the epitome of what a nurse should be. She is selfless. She is smart. She is an amazing team player. She has a heart of gold. If Abby has any downfalls, it's that her heart is so big and she feels everything to her core.

Every patient should have the pleasure of having Abby as a nurse. Every nurse should have the honor of working with Abby. I know I am better for knowing Abby.
