As we know in nursing, there are so many extraordinary life-changing situations that occur. We as nurses, bond with our patients and their families and we create a sacred connection. One recent story that came to mind was of an elderly patient that missed her scheduled appointment. She had an appointment with one of our Cardiologists at 4 pm. It was now 4:45 pm and our NP, Jim Colar was leaving for the day. I, myself a nurse, along with Jodi Tauber RN, were still finishing up before leaving for the day. Jim left and came back a few minutes later to let me know that the patient that was scheduled at 4 pm was waiting outside our door. By this time, all remaining staff had left, the Cardiologist had left already as well, and everything was shut down. After a couple of seconds of collaborating on how best we can care for this elderly patient, Jim took off to find the Cardiologist – who was in a meeting and left the meeting to come back to see the patient. Jodi and I then turned everything back on, got her in a room, and triaged the patient, Jim came back and completed the full assessment before the Cardiologist came back to see the patient. It was a genuine team approach of Jodie RN, Jim, NP, and me, along with the physician, where we demonstrated the commitment, we take very seriously every day to give our patients the most compassionate care. Our motto is to treat every patient as if they were our own family members. We did not want this elderly woman to have to get a ride back home and stress her condition and symptoms or about having to make another appointment. We all stayed way past our shifts and put our personal lives on hold for that extra hour to give our lovely patient the best care possible. This is just one tiny, small example of what this great team at Academic Heart and Vascular does every day! The patient was delighted and so appreciative of the care that she received at AHV. We know that she went home with a peaceful mind and ease after her visit with us.
