I would like to recognize Jeni Arganbright for her unwavering patient care abilities and her emotional capacity to care for the whole family. Jeni demonstrated this with a particular patient and family that has impacted the PICU greatly. During the summer months, the PICU admitted a young boy, who choked on a grape at home. After his admission to the PICU, ended up losing his life. Jeni demonstrated incredible empathy for this family, not only for her patient’s event and outcome but for the loss of a second life in the family. The patient’s aunt was in the room when Jeni found out that the aunt’s baby had suddenly died in our CHOC ED, after a likely SIDS event at home. The family was devastated and now separated between both crises. Jeni using her experience and knowledge from her 14 years at CHOC, called in TIPS volunteers to help this grieving family. She also brought in comfort food trays and called in our Spiritual Care Team. With the help of the Chaplain, they were able to baptize the boy, and proceed toward organ donation, which was so bravely decided upon by the family. Jeni established such an important bond with this family in their time of need, which I know will never be forgotten by the family. As a charge nurse in the PICU, I witness Jeni give everything she has to families in need each shift, but this shift was her shining moment.
