This morning I had to leave work for an appointment. I noticed traffic stopping to allow a young girl to cross the street. She didn't cross and it got my attention. I went over to see if she needed help just to cross the street. She never looked up, but she said no and that she was walking to school. The story didn't really add up. We were across from the ER and I asked her to walk with me so we could warm up. In the ER I notified security to see if they could investigate.
Just around the corner is Joy's office. I knew Joy would be willing and able to help. I also knew the young girl would be more comfortable with Joy there. Thankfully, Joy was in her office. I explained the situation and lightheartedly told her she is more motherly than I am. She jumped up to help and corrected me that she isn't motherly, she's grandmotherly.
When I returned later in the day, I was curious about the outcome.
This young girl didn't have a way to school so she decided to walk and was lost. The distance is further than a child that age should walk, especially with temps below freezing. The girl didn't have a hat, mittens, or boots. Joy made sure she got them. Joy arranged for security to give her a ride to school and rode along, getting her there in time to eat breakfast. Joy then spoke to social work at the school to ensure the child is safe at home.
This is just one example of Joy's compassion, willingness to help, and attention to detail.
The definition of motherly is resembling, or characteristic of a mother, especially in being caring, protective, and kind. Joy is a grandmother now, but she is still a mother and her motherly instincts were accentuated today.
Note: This is Joy's 2nd DAISY Award!
