Megan cared for our father and uncle during his stay on 8 Center. It was a long stay and one that ended in a much-unexpected way. He was a very independent man prior to coming into the hospital. Megan took the time to get to know the man he was, and this enabled her to customize the care she provided to meet his needs. She would look to the family for help and suggestions, enabling us to really feel that we were a part of his care. She was outstanding with her communication and updates to the family. Megan was always professional and compassionate when she would update us. Additionally, she was great with making sure she checked in with us when we would arrive. We would never need to seek her out, but rather she came to us, making us feel that we were her greatest concern. Now we are well aware that she had other patients to care for, but she certainly never made us feel that way when caring for our father/uncle and she had us feeling that we were the only people in the world that she was caring for. I also want to share that her communication during the time he coded and eventually died was outstanding. I know firsthand what a difficult task this can be. Megan did this very professionally, yet with much compassion. She was clear and to the point, which was what was needed in these situations, but the compassion in her tone was felt.
Additionally, after he died, I (his niece) came to pay my last respects. Megan so kindly came in and offered her deepest and most sincere condolences. I most certainly did not expect this, but her words were very kind and comforting. She also let me know that she told the other nurses that I was present to pay my last respects and expressed to me how they wanted to offer their condolences as well. Within just a few short minutes, the room was filled with the beautiful nurses who cared for my uncle during his last three weeks in this world. Looking at their faces, I was overwhelmed with the amount of compassion, love, and care that each one of these wonderful nurses showed to my uncle and us, his family.
While this was the most difficult experience for our entire family, Megan definitely made the difference in our experience. Due to her caring and compassion, we know that in his last days he was most wonderfully cared for by Megan and the rest of the team.
