DAISY Award Winner December 2009

Unit: Pediatrics

I don’t know Terri’s last name, but she is a pediatric nurse. All of my nurses were caring and professional during my stay, but Terri distinguished herself in several ways. First and foremost, Terri gained my trust very quickly. I was in a great deal of pain initially, and she did everything in her power to keep it manageable. There was a sincerity that she exuded that made me feel very comfortable. She checked on me several times during her shift outside the normal vitals checks to make sure I was okay. That was very much appreciated. When I was permitted to have a clear diet, I got very nauseous. The first anti-nausea drug didn’t work, so she suggested a different one that did. This was my first step in going home. So, for these reasons and the amazing kindness Terri showed, I am very glad to have the opportunity to nominate Terri for the Daisy Award.

Everyone was wonderful, from the ER to being admitted. However, I feel that I bonded with Terri. She knew I was a nurse and used to taking care of others. I was not comfortable being the one taken care of and scared of what might be wrong. Terri made every effort to ensure I was comfortable and calm. She explained everything to me as soon as the physicians wrote the orders, knowing I would be more curious than most patients. She was warm, courteous, and professional. I knew I was in capable hands and felt at ease. The following day was a relief knowing that she was my nurse again. I am thankful for her care and privileged to call her a co-worker. Thank you. Thanks to each and every one that took part in my care.
