I have never been in the hospital more than two days. Living down in Texas, and being new to the area is hard enough. I was scared and alone in the hospital as my parents who do live here, were away on vacation and my boyfriend had to work. Brittany took time to explain things and talk to me about them. I knew I was in good hands with her. Not only did she do her normal everyday duties of being a loving nurse, but she talked to me and reassured me we were going to get better. She let me know we were a team and she talked to the doctor with me, and she advocated more for me than any nurse ever has. Brittany talked to me about how she moved to Texas a few years back as well. She suggested different activities and groups I could join. She did this simultaneously while providing me with the proper care I needed. I was in the hospital for 9 days and was poked everywhere and just not wanting to eat. Brittany advocated for me to be able to have a mid-line placed, which I never knew would make such a difference. Brittany not only advocated medical needs but she ensured the kitchen was providing me with something I could at least stomach to try and eat. She got me in touch with the manager after advocating for me for different meals.
I had some rough days as I was in isolation. Brittany made sure to show me I was not alone. When my parents were back from their cruise, they came and visited me. Brittany told them how I was doing and how much of a joy I was, which I have no clue how she found me a joy - I was miserable! When 7 pm rolled around and I knew I wouldn't have Brittany as my nurse any longer, I was pretty sad about that. When Saturday rolled around, Brittany was not my nurse and I was bummed. I was bummed I wouldn't have Brittany again, I heard a knock on my door. She took the time out of her day, to come to see me and chat with me. Talked not only about how I was doing but talked to me like I was a person. She distracted me from how I was feeling and made me feel like a normal person again. Brittany talked to me about life, and things going on in both of our lives. She talked to me like I was a friend of hers for years. I had several nurses during my stay at Hays, but I didn't have the experience I did with Brittany. Seton and hospitals all around need more nurses like her. I appreciate everything Seton did for me, but I will never forget the small act of Brittany. She knew I needed some "regular" talks that didn't revolve around being sick, or being isolated and stuck in my room.
