It would only be fitting to nominate Renea W. Knight as a recipient of the DAISY Award who works on 2 North of the medical surgical unit. It is unfortunate that I cannot name just one incident in which Renea has affected my life personally as well as many others in a very positive way, but I will try my best. And, if acts of kindness to her patients on 2 North were a crime, she would be guilty with a hefty fine!

When working with Renea, one would feel a sense of sisterhood or brotherhood because although she usually carries five patients per shift, she always had time for her fellow nurse which represents TEAMWORK. When I started on 2 North, allegedly one of the busiest floors, I can honestly say that Renea was not one to eat her young. For example, while I was just beginning my ventures as a new nurse, a doctor had written an order to have a PPD placed on a patient. At that time, I was still relatively new and could not find a nurse that I knew of who was certified to place one for me. Well, I passed it on to the incoming shift which was a more experienced well rounded nurse. She was quite livid that I did not complete this task and passed it on to her. Instead of me trying to justify myself, I simply weathered her rant. I felt really bad, but Renea overheard the whole conversation and told me calmly of some suggestions for the next time I come across this situation again. As a matter of fact, until the class to be certified for PPD became available for me to register, Renea certified most of my PPD readings without any hesitation. I would go to different nurses and although some were certified, they did not always have time for me but Renea did.

The one thing that intrigues me the most is that Renea usually carries five patients per shift and they are usually busy patients! However, she always has time for me and everyone else even assisting the charge RN on multiple occasions. I can ask Renea to carry a favor and I know the job will be done with QUALITY. In addition Renea has DIVERSITY, she assists the nurse aids with bathing patients and helping them with other tasks. And she has a way of communicating effectively with the physicians of which I have witnessed quite a few of them learning some techniques from Renea that she has acquired over the years.

There was also a time ER sent me a patient on airborne precautions. She was a poor frail woman with lots of flea bites and several wounds. Her clothes were filthy and bloody, but the woman could barely speak or move. Silence brushed across our eyes as we had seen so much at 2 North but for once we were all lost for words. Without hesitation or even me asking, Renea and Florenda Moody (PCT) took the lead and helped me bathe the poor woman and patch her wounds. I could see in this woman's eyes that she was grateful and thanked us kindly with her eyes although she could not speak. What INTEGRITY, INNOVATION, and COMPASSION my fellow co-workers were (demonstrating) that day and every day. I will never forget that moment.

Quality, Teamwork, Innovation, Diversity and Integrity: these are the components of what it takes to be a great nurse, and her name is Renea W. Knight!!
