Having been a patient at NCH over six times in the past 20 years, I have come to expect and have received the best in nursing care. The same was true on my recent hospitalization. While there, I could not help overhearing what was happening in the other bed and the exceptional way in which my nurse, Jennifer Merritt, handled it. The man in the other bed had a blood pressure reading of 189/98 and was demanding to be released. He, his wife, and another couple in voices that could be heard up and down the hall demeaned, mocked and threatened Jen when she told them the blood pressure must be under 150 for the man to be released. I confess that this 10-15 minute tirade was so severe that I wished I could have somehow intervened, but which I knew was none of my business. It is difficult to describe the intensity of this incident, but it can be verified by other nurses and techs on duty that day. This is when one of NCH's best, Jen, calmly continued her administration without ever raising her voice, just as though the diatribe was not happening until the man's vitals allowed his dismissal. When the incident was over and everything was quiet, Jen, visibly shaken, sat down to regain her composure. I could see that other nurses and techs were proud of her and had great respect for her. This is the finest example of professional and compassionate care I have ever witnessed; I enthusiastically nominate Jen, an extraordinary nurse, to receive the DAISY Award.
