When a fan couldn’t be located, Zoee brought in her own personal fan and let Mom use it for the duration of her stay.
We would like to nominate Zoee Harrington from the Stepdown unit as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This nurse demonstrated clinical skill, compassionate care, exceptional service, and a commitment to excellence. I would like to share the detailed story about why this nurse is so special.
From September 2025 through January 31, 2026, our mom, P, spent many days in the hospital. Zoee cared for her several times during those stays. Over time, Zoee came to truly know and understand Pearlie in a way no other nurse did—not because she had to, but because she genuinely wanted to. Zoee continually went above and beyond in her care. Several moments stand out to our family.
P often felt both cold and hot at the same time. When a fan couldn’t be located, Zoee brought in her own personal fan and let Mom use it for the duration of her stay. That simple act made a tremendous difference in Mom’s comfort.
She also wrote meticulous notes throughout the room to remind and inform other nurses of specific details of P’s care so nothing would be overlooked.
Zoee’s attentiveness also led to an important clinical observation. She noticed something unusual about P’s skin. Through research and her own clinical intuition, she suspected an acute syndrome causing P additional discomfort related to a medication she had received. Zoee advocated for P by bringing this to the doctor’s attention—an example of both her clinical excellence and her commitment to being her patient’s voice.
P also struggled with excessive diarrhea and apologized to Zoee for needing so much help. Zoee gently reassured her that caring for her actually made her feel good, because she knew it helped P feel better. In those moments, Zoee preserved Mom’s dignity and reminded her she was never a burden.
We will also never forget the weekend of the January 2026 snowstorm, when many of us were hunkered down together in the hospital. Zoee turned that Saturday into a “self-care day” for Mom, spending extra time with her, encouraging her, and offering thoughtful guidance to our family. In the middle of a difficult time, Zoee created a moment of comfort and humanity that we will always remember.
To sum it up, Zoee’s CARE went above and beyond in every way:
C – Creative in finding ways to make Mom more comfortable
A – Adaptive to the unique needs of her patient, even when standard protocols didn’t fully fit the
situation
R – Respectful, always treating P with dignity and kindness
E – Exceptional in both clinical insight and bedside care
Our family will be forever grateful for the compassion and dedication Zoee showed our mom. The care she provided made a meaningful difference not only to Pearlie, but to all of us who loved her.
Thank you, Zoee, for everything you did.
