Every interaction Zoe has with patients is filled with this same intention and heart. She doesn't just provide excellent care—she creates meaningful experiences, builds trust, and restores joy even in the hardest moments.
Zoe is not only an exceptional nurse but a true light for the institution. Her clinical expertise, teamwork, and compassion are outstanding—but it’s the extra touches she brings to patient care that truly set her apart.
Zoe consistently goes above and beyond to make the Infusion Center feel less like a hospital and more like a place of comfort, celebration, and hope. She thoughtfully coordinates Easter egg hunts, birthday celebrations, and other special moments for patients and their families, especially when they fall on weekends and holidays, and the full hospital staff is not on campus to mark the occasions.
These events might seem small, but to the children and families enduring difficult days, they are deeply meaningful. Through these acts, Zoe reminds them they are not only patients, but beloved individuals worthy of joy.
Zoe is also a tireless support to her fellow staff members, always stepping in to ensure that every patient receives the care they need, no matter how busy the day may be. Her presence is calming, her work ethic unmatched, and her empathy genuine and far-reaching.
One moment that perfectly illustrates Zoe’s compassion happened during a particularly difficult day for a family. A mother and her child had spent the entire night in the Acute Care Unit due to an acute episode and had not slept. They had a flight to catch that afternoon, and the mother was physically and emotionally exhausted.
While Zoe transfused the patient in the infusion center, she quietly picked up their breakfast from Kay Café, allowed the mother to sleep, cut up the child’s breakfast, and fed him so his mom could rest—even just for a little while. That small, quiet act of love made a world of difference for that family and embodied the true meaning of nursing.
Another unforgettable moment came around Christmastime. A young patient was critically ill in the ICU and loved LOL dolls. Zoe coordinated with Child Life Services to get the exact dolls the patient wanted. But she didn’t stop there—Zoe created a bit of holiday magic by telling the patient that Santa had delivered the dolls early while doing a test run for Christmas Eve.
That tender, imaginative act brought so much joy and wonder in the midst of suffering. Unfortunately, the patient passed away one week later. But in her final days, thanks to Zoe, she experienced happiness, surprise, and the love of someone who cared deeply.
Every interaction Zoe has with patients is filled with this same intention and heart. She doesn't just provide excellent care—she creates meaningful experiences, builds trust, and restores joy even in the hardest moments. Her ability to make each patient feel seen, special, and safe is a gift that cannot be taught.
Zoe O’Bryan exemplifies everything the DAISY Award represents. She brings heart, healing, and humanity into every encounter, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her on our team.
