Because of Zoe's efforts, patients move through the pre-op process more smoothly and with less stress.
I would like to nominate Nurse Zoe Alterman for the prestigious DAISY Award for the incredible support she provides to our patients. In her role, she helped create a way to track patients from the moment they are told they need surgery through every step leading up to their procedure. While this may sound like an administrative task, what she truly does is guide patients through what can feel like a confusing and stressful process.

Many of our patients feel overwhelmed trying to complete preoperative appointments, tests, and clearances. She consistently goes out of her way to help them understand what they need, answers their questions with patience, and reassures them when they feel anxious. She embodies the ICare principles. Patients frequently express their gratitude, sharing how much they appreciate having someone who helps them navigate the complicated healthcare system and makes them feel supported.

Because of her efforts, patients move through the pre-op process more smoothly and with less stress. Her work not only improved the patient experience but has also allowed our team to care for more patients in need of surgery. Most importantly, she brings kindness, calmness, and genuine compassion to every interaction. She makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients every day.

Zoe has always been an asset to UMC; she previously worked in the main hospital in the quality department, where she helped improve patient quality improvement and also helped different units to be survey-ready. She always did it with a smile on her face, and while it might be nerve-wracking to have tracers come through your unit, I always found it a joy when she came through. She always approached things as a learning experience for those involved.

She is definitely missed at the main hospital, but she is making a world of difference in her new role, helping patients navigate the healthcare system.
