I went to the emergency room with shoulder pain. I’m from Brazil, and my English is very limited. It’s scary to go to the hospital when you don’t speak English well. My nurse was wonderful. He helped translate for the reception staff during check-in. He provided a Portuguese video translator to help the other staff and the doctor. I appreciated that. However, it was his knowledge, awareness, and compassion for Latin America and my country, Brazil, that made me feel safe and comfortable. He explained the tests, the medications, and the expected timeline for the results. I felt informed about my treatment and involved in the decision-making process. I will return to this hospital in the future and will ask that Zach be my nurse again.
