She created a QR code for the patient's room to scan for an audio recording of her completing a full neuro exam, a description of the timestamps for when certain questions are asked, and printed phonetic pronunciations of the questions if anyone needed to repeat them to the patient.
We had a patient on our unit, KP16, who speaks only Taishanese, a Chinese dialect specific to the Taishan region of China. It’s apparently now considered a minority dialect, with limited availability on NYU’s translation services. Communicating with the patient was difficult when the family wasn’t available, and the medical team often couldn’t reach the family or a translator who spoke this dialect, leaving the patient and staff struggling. One of our night nurses, Yu Yao Liang, amazingly, speaks this specific dialect. She spent hours of her own time putting together a communication board for the patient, specific to Taishanese. She created a QR code for the patient's room to scan for an audio recording of her completing a full neuro exam, a description of the timestamps for when certain questions are asked, and printed phonetic pronunciations of the questions if anyone needed to repeat them to the patient. Yu went above and beyond, understanding the vulnerability and frustration of language barriers, and knowing that her patient's neurological assessments and prompt medical interventions could be delayed due to this barrier. Yu improved this patient’s medical care tenfold and quite possibly her life. The family was incredibly thankful for Yu's effort. Many many thanks, Yu!
