Whitley’s actions have a meaningful impact on patient safety, team morale, and the overall working environment in the OR.
Whitley consistently demonstrates compassion, partnership, and teamwork in the Operating Room. She recognizes that every member of the surgical environment plays an essential role in patient safety, including EVS. She treats us as true partners in health, not just support staff. One example that stands out is how she communicates with us regarding OR room turnover and patient safety considerations. She invites EVS to notify her team when surgical materials or equipment need attention from clinical staff, and she listens to our input. She also encourages us to speak up when we notice safety risks, such as caregivers entering rooms during UV light disinfection. When a UV unit triggered the OR alarm, instead of placing blame or reacting with frustration, Whitley came to the room, stayed with us, and worked alongside EVS technicians to understand what happened. She asked what we knew, shared what her team knew, and treated us as equal contributors in finding a solution. This moment showed her empathy, respect, and trust. She didn’t assume, dismiss, or minimize our perspective. She asked, she listened, and she worked with us. That kind of communication builds belonging and psychological safety. It helps the OR feel like a unified team, not separate roles or hierarchies. Whitley embodies “We are better together.” She creates an environment where EVS feels valued, heard, and proud of our work. I feel fortunate to collaborate with her. She lifts people up, and in doing so, strengthens patient care and team culture every day.

Whitley’s actions have a meaningful impact on patient safety, team morale, and the overall working environment in the OR. Her willingness to involve EVS in decision-making reinforces that we are an essential part of maintaining a sterile, safe surgical environment. This increases accuracy and reduces the risk of missed cleaning steps or safety hazards, which directly protects patients. Her leadership also improves team communication. When the UV light alarm event occurred, she could have reacted with frustration or blame. Instead, she stayed with us and worked to understand the situation together. By doing so, she strengthened trust between EVS and clinical staff and encouraged open communication about safety issues going forward. Now, EVS technicians feel more confident reporting concerns and asking questions — and that leads to safer rooms and better outcomes for patients. Most importantly, her compassion and respect create a sense of belonging. In the OR, where the pace is fast and expectations are high, her acknowledgment of EVS contributions boosts morale and reduces burnout. When caregivers feel valued, they take greater pride in their work, which enhances the quality of patient care. Whitley’s leadership reminds us that we are truly better together, and her actions have made the OR a more collaborative, safe, and supportive place to work.
