What I especially appreciate is how, despite her very busy duties, she stopped to talk to me about my daughter's history and acknowledged how my daughter was feeling and acting.
My daughter receives monthly IVIG. She never feels well after treatment, but there have been a few times that she reacted poorly and needed a little extra treatment. Today, my daughter received IVIG and started to not feel great--her coloring changed and her BP became more erratic and low. My daughter's nurse, Wendy, did not hesitate to check her BP again, bring extra fluids like Gatorade, and contact the physician. What I especially appreciate is how, despite her very busy duties, she stopped to talk to me about my daughter's history and acknowledged how my daughter was feeling and acting. She didn't try to dismiss our concerns or have an attitude of "I know better because I'm a medical professional.” I overheard her repeating to the doctor what I had described. I appreciated this because parents are more familiar with their children, so what may seem okay to a stranger isn't to someone who knows how the child is usually, and not all medical professionals pay attention to this. Wendy also sat down to review possible symptoms that could occur after infusions. She's great at answering questions and treated us both with care and respect. Even though she was constantly being paged to help other staff, she paid attention to details and double-checked information. My daughter is friendly but very shy. She also worries about bothering the staff. Because of this, she will just tolerate negative symptoms quietly without speaking up. She has had a couple past instances where her negative reaction to the IVIG was dismissed and blamed on anxiety. When a medical provider listens and pays attention to her like Wendy did, it builds my daughter's confidence as a patient to advocate for herself. I am grateful that Wendy didn't hesitate to contact the on-call physician to ask about further care so my daughter can recover better.
