August 2026 Honoree
Vicki Mason, RN
First, let me just say I wish I could nominate everyone in Radiology because let’s be honest— they all rock! We absolutely love all of the staff in Radiology at Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital. My daughter, M, has had to have a few exams here, including some with sedation. From the very beginning, everyone has gone out of their way to make M not only feel comfortable, but also explain things in such a way that she truly seems to understand.
M is extremely sensitive and, in the beginning, she had to have not only the numbing cream for IV’s but also the nitrous gas to help relax her and ease her into the process. Everyone always speaks to her kindly and with so much patience at each visit. I mean it when I say I really wish I could give everyone an award, but there has been one person who has truly gone out of her way each time we’re here. That person’s Vicki Mason. She has been such a vital part of the process for M when she comes.
M did have an unpleasant experience during her first sedation case, but the next time things went much better because Vicki was able to start M’s IV on the first try. Vicki went out of her way to let me know that whenever M had an exam here, to let her know, and she would try to do the IV. Well, M ended up coming to the ER at a later date, and because she’s such a difficult stick for IVs, I found Vicki and explained what was happening. Vicki walked with me to the ER, and she helped explain to the nurses in the ER what a difficult stick she is and to call her if they were unable to get an IV going. Well, it wasn’t long, and Vicki and Mayberry-Sedation Nursing did go back to the ER to start M’s IV and got it right away with no Nitrous either!
So now, as of today, she just had a CT, and she let Ms. Vicki start her IV without the nitrous again! I am so proud of my girl that she’s come so far from where she was, but she could never have gotten here without such an amazing Radiology and Children’s Child Life team and Ms. Vicki at the reins! You are a superhero in our book, Ms. Vicki! Thank you for all you do every day!
