During one of the most prolonged and vulnerable periods of my life, I was cared for in the CVICU 2 Heart Transplant Unit while waiting for a heart transplant. A long-term hospitalization places extraordinary physical and emotional demands on a patient, and it requires nurses who not only possess exceptional clinical skill but also honor the dignity, routines, and humanity of those in their care.

Vianey exemplified every DAISY value in practice. From the beginning, she took the time to understand my daily routine, small but meaningful anchors that helped me maintain a sense of normalcy during weeks of uncertainty. Vianey consistently respected my preferences for timing, communication, and rest, recognizing that preserving routine during a long CVICU stay is not a luxury, but a vital component of healing. Her compassion and presence made an intimidating, high acuity environment feel safer and more personal.

Clinically, her vigilance and advocacy were exceptional. On one occasion, she promptly recognized blood in my urine, an early and subtle but significant change. Rather than dismissing it as incidental, she immediately escalated her findings to the medical team, ensured timely evaluation, and followed through until the issue was addressed. Vianey’s attentiveness and decisive action prevented potential complications and demonstrated the highest standard of patient safety and professional accountability.

Vianey consistently went above and beyond her assigned responsibilities, checking in even when not formally assigned to my care, ensuring continuity, and advocating for me when I was too exhausted or overwhelmed to speak for myself. Her calm confidence, attention to detail, and genuine kindness reflect a nurse who views patients not as tasks, but as people entrusted to her care.

This nurse embodies the essence of the DAISY Award: extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence, and unwavering advocacy. Vianey’s actions had a lasting impact on my transplant journey.
