Veronica was on duty as the nursing supervisor when my dad arrived in the ER after suffering a stroke. From the moment we walked in, she set the tone- warm, welcoming, and genuinely compassionate. She immediately helped us feel grounded in a situation that was anything but. The next day (a Sunday), Veronica became his assigned nurse in the ICU. She walked in with the same calm presence and was able to clearly explain the significant progress my dad had already made since being admitted just 24 hours earlier. Her ability to communicate complex medical updates in a way our whole family could understand was such a gift. Over the next several days, while she was on shift, Veronica continued to care for my dad and for all of us with extraordinary attentiveness. She had an incredible ability to match our (mostly nervous) energy without ever letting the anxiety of the situation shake her. Veronica was so real: a true human-to-human connection in a moment when we desperately needed one. She met us exactly where we were, offering humor when it helped, honesty when it mattered most, and space to feel everything we were feeling, from fear to hope. Veronica was also an unwavering advocate for my dad. She made thoughtful, proactive recommendations about his care to the doctors and to other nurses during shift change. Even after she was no longer assigned to him, she still stopped by to check in. Those extra moments meant more than she could know. Our family is profoundly grateful for Veronica’s care, compassion, and expertise during such an overwhelming and frightening time. She not only supported my dad medically, but she also supported all of us emotionally. Her presence made a lasting impact, and we are forever thankful.
