This was my 2nd total hip replacement and there were multiple things that were different medically in the past 3 years since the other one. I was kept overnight, and that is when I met a true "Florence Nightingale." She was on night duty. She came in, introduced herself, and immediately saw that I was uncomfortable. At 80 years young now, I was not comfortable and in pain for the first time. I told her that I was hesitant to take pain meds because of the side effects, and since I also had IBS, I didn't want that to flare up. She went to my chart, came into my room, and helped educate and adjust each med throughout the night to get the best and most effective way to prevent a flare-up and also give me relief. I couldn't believe how much time she spent caring for my needs in between her other patients. She never let up throughout the night and assured me that it would work. It did!! I had a little rest, pain-free without the worry of my IBS. Also, before her shift ended in the am, the trays were brought up. When she saw what they had brought me, she was concerned that I couldn't have any of it. She immediately called the kitchen and had them make something that would be easy on my stomach but still give me a base for the meds to be absorbed. In this cold and uncaring world we live in today, she was truly a joy and honestly cared about her patient. She made my stay comfortable. I truly am thankful to have met her.
