Velma Ross exemplifies the true meaning of caring. Velma is helpful to the staff, she is the first person in the room for an emergency situation, always listens to our concerns and does what she can to try to make a worse situation better. With her patients Velma demonstrates knowledge, caring, and leadership.

One of our LTC young adult patients who uses a wheelchair recently got on the elevator wearing his coat. The staff found some of his behaviors quite challenging. Velma, who is always focused on the safety of our patients, immediately got on the elevator to follow him. Although he had his coat on, the temperatures were quite cold. He started to wheel himself downhill on the sidewalk. Velma scurried right behind him into the cold even though she did not have a coat on. When his wheelchair got stuck, Velma was there to assist. Although, he didn't want the assistance, Velma stayed with him until the wheelchair was moving again, and pushed him back up the hill and into the building.

Velma is a great choice for the DAISY Award. She is an extraordinary nurse!
