Vanessa, RN, has been caring for a patient on 6 West for about a week, who has unfortunately been given a poor prognosis following a suicide attempt. Vanessa admitted this patient last week, learned the patient had a very strained relationship with some family, and, in addition to providing exceptional care to the patient, has worked with the family to heal wounds and bring closure.

Vanessa has spoken with all members of the family, learned who the patient was as a mother, sister, daughter, and friend. Vanessa learned she likes pink, strawberries, and having her hair braided. Vanessa came in with supplies she paid for out of her own pocket and painted the patient's toenails pink, braided and decorated her hair with strawberry clips, and decorated her bed with pink and strawberries.

I had the pleasure of watching Vanessa speak with the family as she decorated the patient and the room and lifted their spirits. They had nothing but praise for Vanessa and how well she cared for the patient this last week, and how thankful they were that she went out of her way to talk with them on the phone. Then, I was brought to tears as I listened to the patient's son, who initially wanted nothing to do with the patient on the night of admission, FaceTime his mother (the patient) and say his last goodbye, and say he was sorry and all is well with them now. He then thanked Vanessa for calling him and keeping him updated, and helping him forgive and come to terms with his mother's passing.

Vanessa then got the family’s requested song, played it for her, and walked her down to the OR to donate her organs. As a nurse myself, I am so impressed with Vanessa's compassion, care, and family-centered approach. I truly believe this family was able to come to terms, grieve, and close old wounds due to Vanessa's diligence in family-centered care, and because of all of that, a liver and two kidneys will be recovered and saved at least three people.
