Trisha listened to her gut and pursued a small vital sign change to a higher level. Trisha knew something was not right, which allowed interventions to be started before the patient completely decompensated.
Trisha has been with Adventist Health Sierra Vista for just over a year. She started as a new graduate and was hired and continues to work on Med Surg. Trisha has excelled in her role as a med surg nurse. She receives continuous accolades from patients, team members, physicians, and clinical supervisors for her kindness, communication, teamwork, and attention to detail. What also stands out about Trisha is that during the long stent of state surveys, she was one of the first staff members to participate in audits consistently and without pushback. When complimented once on her continued audit compliance, she stated, “It is not a big deal to do the audits and shows us where we can improve processes.” Time management can be challenging as a new graduate, and her answer was far beyond her nursing years.
Recently, Trisha cared for a patient going through a challenging medical journey. Trisha did not necessarily know what was wrong with the patient, but she knew something was off. Clinically, the young 30-something-year-old patient was only showing slight tachycardia as the change in vital signs, which most people may have thought was related to the pain he was having. Besides the pain this patient was experiencing, Trisha noticed slight mentation changes and dizzy spells, urging her to utilize her chain of command and call a rapid response.
The patient ended up having an abdominal splenic arterial bleed, needing a blood transfusion for a hemoglobin of less than 5, and Interventional Radiology embolization in the middle of the night to embolize the bleed.
Trisha listened to her gut and pursued a small vital sign change to a higher level. The patient was young, compensating for the internal bleeding, and technically hemodynamically stable. Trisha knew something was not right, which allowed interventions to be started before the patient completely decompensated.
Trisha saved this young man’s life and has helped save many others. Trisha has a bright future ahead as a nurse!
In every interaction, Trisha consistently shows dedication, compassion, and excellence in nursing. Her contributions to our team and their impact on patient care make her a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.
