In the complex, deeply human work of inpatient mental health, leadership is not only measured in systems and outcomes—it is felt in quiet moments of compassion, calm amid crisis, and steadfast advocacy for both patients and staff. Dr. Tiwanna Chambliss-Tiller embodies that kind of leadership every day. She creates a therapeutic environment where dignity, safety, and hope are constants, even when acuity rises and uncertainty presses in.

Dr. Tiller leads with presence. She is the leader who shows up—on the unit, in the huddle, at the bedside—listening, coaching, and reminding us that the work we do changes lives. She elevates the voices of nurses, empowers them to grow, and ensures they have the tools and support to deliver trauma-informed, patient-centered care. Her guidance is steady and empathetic; her expectations are clear and grounded in best practice.

Because of Dr. Tiller, our team feels trusted to make decisions, supported when challenges arise, and united around a shared purpose: to provide safe, compassionate, high-quality psychiatric care.

One evening, during an inclement weather emergency, Dr. Tiller became the anchor our team needed. She coordinated real-time updates, secured coverage, and personally checked on team members throughout the night—ensuring not only physical safety, but emotional support. In moments like this, her leadership transforms stress into stability and fear into focus. Patients felt the continuity of care; staff felt seen and cared for. That is the hallmark of a DAISY Nurse Leader.

Dr. Tiller also understands that caring for mental health patients begins with caring for the caregivers. She prioritizes staff well-being, normalizes asking for help, and fosters psychological safety. She encourages reflective practice, supports debriefs after high-acuity events, and champions accessible resources so no one carries the weight of this work alone. Under her leadership, we have become a stronger, more resilient team—one where compassion is sustainable, and excellence is expected.
