While visiting the ER last week, I witnessed an act of compassion that went beyond nursing care. A patient was unable to leave upon discharge because public bus transportation would not allow them to ride without footwear. The patient did not have shoes. Tito overheard the issue as it unfolded and jumped into action to assist. He went to his workplace locker, grabbed his own personal pair of HOKA shoes, and gave them to the patient. In that moment, the patient’s illness was no longer a problem. The patient’s face showed appreciation before he even spoke. The patient thanked Tito and left with a comfortable pair of shoes. The joy of being able to help the patient beyond bedside care was written on Tito’s face.
