Timothy worked tirelessly throughout that day, repeatedly attempting to get the physician to just come and see her, since it was clear to him that a patient in this condition should not be released.
My mother was admitted to Emory Decatur Hospital for a compression fracture in her back. This was associated with excruciating pain, especially when being moved and near the end of the dosage periods of the pain medications. While other nurses did their jobs adequately, Timothy went above and beyond: he delivered medications to her and always checked back to see how they were working. Even when a painful repositioning was required, he would remain with her for a while afterward, holding her hand and just being there for her as the additional motion-induced pain subsided. Put simply, we all felt she was being seen as a person, not a problem.
We were delighted when we saw that he was again her nurse the next day! On that day, unfortunately, the hall physician had decided that she was ready for discharge to rehab, since she was deferring a separate procedure that was not related to the agonizing back pain. Unfortunately, her pain was clearly no longer managed successfully by the medications, even when staggering different medications. Timothy worked tirelessly throughout that day, repeatedly attempting to get the physician to just come and see her, since it was clear to him that a patient in this condition should not be released. While the physician never did actually appear in person, Timothy's efforts eventually managed to convince them to delay Mom's discharge and helped facilitate scheduling a consultation with the Interventional Radiology department about performing a pain-mitigating procedure on the affected vertebra. The consultation happened the next day, the procedure the day after that, and Mom was discharged to a rehab facility the following day. While she was still in pain throughout, it was sufficiently under control that she could move to her next phase of recovery. Even now that she is in this other facility, Timothy remains the stand-out example of what we would wish a nurse to be. He was empathetic, patient, and knowledgeable; he was generous in sharing that knowledge with the patient and her family, and he always made Mom feel as if he cared about her and her situation.
